Newborn Photo Sessions - What to expect

When to book

I recommend booking your newborn photo session as early as possible to avoid missing out on those precious early moments.
Sessions are pencilled in for 1 week after babys due date, then parents keep me informed and when baby arrives we confirm the exact date (5-10 days old).

Session Time

Full newborn sessions are up to 3 hours.

We take plenty of breaks, a large portion of the session is spent feeding, changing and cuddling to get baby comfortable, as well as cleaning up accidents (please don't worry about this, it's totally natural and always happens).

We will also get some lovely family photos during this time.

Feeding

Babies photograph best when full and settled.  I usually have parents feed baby just before we start but please don't worry about straying from your usual schedule before that, just do what you usually do and we will see how baby is.

Sleeping

Sometimes babies just don't sleep during a session, even if they usually sleep a lot.  Please don't worry about this, we can capture some amazing awake images and these are often parents favourites when they view their gallery.
You may like to give baby a bath before the session, it is a good way for them to exercise their lungs and fluff up their hair.

What to wear

If you could make sure adults and other children being photographed are wearing plain, neutral coloured clothes.  Black, white or grey is perfect but colours are fine if that reflects 'you' more than neutrals, you need to be comfortable.
No bright logos or distracting words or features.

Parents

I do recommend parents be involved in the photos also as this is such a special time it would be a shame to look back and regret not being part of it.  Having photos of themselves with their parents will also be valuable future keepsakes for your child.

Relax

Babies can sense stress and anxiety (particularly from their parents) so it really pays to keep the sessions relaxed.
Please don't worry if they are unsettled, not sleeping or go to the toilet on the blankets.  It doesn't worry me at all and some great moments are captured when babies are not doing what they should.  We just go with what happens and baby dictates a lot of that.

This can actually be a good time for parents to take a break and sit back while I take some lovely photographs.
